Explain what is meant by each of the statements above and identify how Victor Frankenstein displays these common traits. Use quotations from the text to support your answers.

The god complex

“it was the secrets of heaven and earth that i desire to learn…”

Frankenstein wanted the same power and knowledge as God and he wanted to know everything that happens on this earth and beyond. This quote is also foreshadowing that frankenstein will push his luck and try do something no other human has done. Before frankenstein creates the creature he is so confident within himself and he is a little cocky about how much he is willing to learn and how much he already know.“it was the secrets of heaven and earth that i desire to learn…” He is confident that he will be able to learn all this stuff just because he believes in god, he never doubts himself or is worried about what will happen after he know all this and he believes that creating the creature will be a positive and make him a better person.

A distressing event in their early life

Just before frankenstein goes off Ingolstadt to study the things that will help him with creating this creature. His sister, Elizabeth gets sick with scarlet fever and their mother cares for her. In doing this the mother also gets sick and dies. “During her illness many arguments had been urged to persuade my mother to refrain from attending upon her.” Frankenstein’s mother had loved her children dearly and she was willing to risk her life to stay with their children.

A flaw in their moral compass

A flaw in the moral compass is when you can’t judge what is right and what’s wrong. Frankenstein has a lot of flaws in his moral compass, to begin with he wants to go against the  normal creation of life and create this being in a lab, by himself. Frankenstein believes that he is greater that everyone just because he believes in god, he believes that god is on his side and will allow him to create and learn things the ordinary people. He is trying to be god-like and have the same values as god. ““Learn from me… at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge”

He is saying that after finding all this stuff and creating a creature he is warning us that knowing everything turned his life and never go out of your way to know everything on earth.

A moment recognition or revelation

A moment where frankenstein realises what he did wrong is when he almost makes another creature. The original creature is blackmailing him and saying that if frankenstein doesn’t make another creature he will kill everyone in his family. Frankenstein debates with himself and the creature if he should do it. Frankenstein gets going on the creature when he realises that the first creature caused all most of his family to die and he is constantly on edge because the creature could show up at any minute or kill another family member. Frankenstein has many regrets about making to first creature and he was so worried that he had no control over the original creature and he just imagined what it would be like if there was two creatures and they could have babies and make a whole other race.
